Friends Social Walk September 2019

The weather gods were on our side for the Friends Social Walk on August 17th. Despite gales and heavy rain beforehand, the day itself was bright and blustery and was ideal for a walk through the Country Park.

There were seventeen of us, mainly Friends, but also four people who had seen the walk advertised in the Hastings Observer. As part of the idea of the Social Walk was to attract non-members who might be interested in becoming a Friend, this was very pleasing.

We walked along the top of Warren Glen, down Brakey Bank and then across to the bottom of Fairlight Glen from where we  planned to take the narrow, steeper path next to the stream, but sadly it was too slippery underfoot to do this, although everyone was encouraged to return on another day and explore this magical corner of the Country Park.

From Fairlight Glen we retraced our footsteps to the bottom of Brakey Bank, across the top of Warren Glen and then made our way back through the Quarry.

For the first part of the walk we were very pleased to be joined by Julie Apps, the Park Ranger, who chatted with everyone about her work, talked about the flora and fauna and happily answered all our questions, before leaving us at the bottom of Brakey Bank to resume her duties helping protect many of the green spaces within the Hastings Area.

It was a very successful event and one we may consider doing again.
